CONTESTANTS ON JUMP
Entrants in Baseball Race Change Positions.
T. FRANK MORGAN NOW LEADS
Government Printing Office Employe Passes All Competitors - Others Are Rapidly Forging to the Front - Jefries-Johnson Fight Contest Is Nearing the End - P. F. O'Connor Retains Lead.
With but half a month to run, the Jeffries-Johnson contest has resolved itself into a fight between the leading contestants that bids fair to eclipse all previous records in coupon contests in this city. The four prize positions for which the different contestants are battling are being fought for with a dogged persistency that is astonishing, and with each successive standing a change appears in one of the coveted places, only to have the original jump back into place the next week.
The baseball contest, which will run much longer than the fight race, as it does not close until October, has also caused avalanches of coupons to pour into the contest department each day, and has been characterized with a seesawing of positions. Persistant work on the part of some of the entrants in this race has brought them from a comparative low standing to a position from where they can hope to show in the finals.
Morgan Leads Baseball Contestants.
T. Frank MORGAN, of the government printing office, who was a late starter in the contest for a trip to the world's series, by virtue of his concentrated efforts in the baseball contest alone has risen from second position, which he held last week, to the top place this week, with the score of 71,888, having ousted R. W. COLMAN, who now holds second place, with 63,313, John A. FOGLE retains third place, with 42,420, but a newcomer in the prize quartet, William HEATH, holds fourth place, having obtained 38,502 points and pushing W. E. THOMPSON, who held this position last week, into fifth place.
P. F. O'CONNOR still remains in the lead in the fight contest, and has increased his lead materially over that he held last week, having now close to 100,000 points. Second and third places remain unchanged, I. H. ROWLAND having the former with 75,476 votes and J. J. ROCHE holding the latter with an even 60,000, but fourth place has been subjected to a change because of a spurt by Martin BECKER, who is at present running in the money, with 54,120 points, a lead of almost 5,000 over Jerome HARTNETT, who holds fifth place.
Percy GIVEN, Lew NEWMYER, S. GOODACRE, and D. J. FITZWILLIAMS, high up in both contests, have all made substantial contributions during the last week, and have a fine chance yet. to finish as leaders.
Following is the standing in the two contests up to noon Friday:
