74 Seniors Graduated At Francis Junior High

Transcriber's Note: Francis Junior High was one of DC's African-American schools.

The first graduating class of Francis Junior High School was awarded diplomas yesterday at exercises in the school auditorium by Leon L. Perry, supervising principal, for the Board of Education. There were 33 certified to the Armstrong High School, 33 to the Dunbar High School, and 8 to the Cardozo High School, 74 in all.

Graduation exercises proved a departure from the customary program, all addresses being made by pupils of the graduating class who had won highest honors in scholarship. Dorothy Love Clark was salutatorian. The class oration was delivered by Aaron Beverly, replete with significant facts concerning the junior high school as a distinct branch of the public school. The valedictory was by Charlotte Dorothy Woodbury.

The class was presented to the representative of the Board of Education by Robert N. Mattingly, principal, who was recently made principal of the Cardozo Business High School.

Garnet C. Wilkinson, assistant superintendent, commented on the significant development of a definite vogue of distinctive exercises in junior high schools.
