Description: Obituary for Mrs. Lula J. Gordon Burgamy

Date: April 4 1924

Newspaper published in: Athens, TX

Source: Trinity Valley Community College Library

I have been requested by friends at Murchison and the Murchison correspondent to write the following.
On April 4th, 1924 at 3 p. m. the angel of the Lord carried away the soul of Mrs. Lula J. (Gordon) Burgamy, of Murchison, Texas. Mrs. Burgamy, who was born, March 17, 1854 and was married to Emory G. Burgamy December 8, 1870, in Spalding county Georgia, was a woman of strong Christian character and a devoted member of the M. E. church since 1869. She endured much suffering during her last illness, but patient, and wanted to go, brave to the last moment. She was buried in **Larue cemetery bye the side of her dear husband, who had gone on some seventeen years before. She made her home with her only surviving daughter, Mrs. Porter Luker of Murchison. They had 10 children, 16 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Only three children survive her, Marvin Burgamy of LaRue, Eustace Burgamy of Athens and Mrs. Cora Luker of Murchison. Mrs. Essie Martin, the wife of a prominent business man of Murchison is her granddaughter whom she raised from a six month old girl when her mother died. She loved Essie as her own and Essie had the opportunity to return a part of this great kindness in her last days. Rev. Joe B. Wells, Methodist pastor of Murchison was visiting in Texarkana when she died, but came at once to attend the funeral services.
I have known this good woman for years have been in her home;; she has been in our home; have heard her testify for her Lord and Master. She was a good woman and her children know where to find her.
Emulate her good example and meet her in the great beyond. Mrs. Burgamy was known all over the eastern end of the county and those who knew her best loved her most, for she always met them with a smile.
B. C. Hall
