Description: Esteemed Citizen Dies In Schurz (Derig)
Date: August 23 1933Last Friday enening another pioneer of Southern Nevada passed to the Great Beyond. The angel of death took from our midst Joseph F. DERIG, 63, a resident of the county for the past 22 years. He resided in Goldfield in the early days of that camp. Later he moved to Thorne and about 12 years ago establishing his home in Schurz where he conducted a store and hotel.
Joe DERIG was beloved by all those who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. He was known for his charitable and kindly acts to those in need of a friend, and his demise will be learned with profound sorrow.
He had been aflicted with asthma for several years, which caused his death.
The remains were brought to Hawthorne Saturday and the funeral was conducted by A.S. PHIPPS, mortician of Yerington, interment being in the local cemetery.
He is survived by his wife and son Leo DERIG, an employee of the state highyway department at Schurz.
The casket bearers were Michael KNOPF, Henry BOERLIN, S.T. KELSO, John KURTZ, Oscar GERBIG and J.H. MILLER.
The Rev. M.J. DUCKHAM of Schurz officiationg at the services held at 2 p.m., Saturday in the Knights of Pythias hall. A large number of autos containing friends followed the remains to their last resting place.
