Description: Capture of Two Schooners on the Nanticoke

Date: July 26 1861

Newspaper published in: Baltimore

Source: newspaper archives

We mentioned a few days ago that the steamer 'Yankee' had brought to the city docks of Washington, two prize vessels, seized on the Nanticoke River. Both vessels, it appears, belong to CAPTAIN ATWARD JOHNSON, of Lakes District in Dorchester county, Md. The 'Cambridge Democrat" gives the following particulars of the seizure;
The vessels loaded in April last, the one at Baltimore with an assorted cargo , the other at Philadelphia with iron. On that day they started in company from Baltimore, the one "Brunette" for Portsmouth, Petersburg and Richmond, the other, "Ringdove" for Richmond. They arrived off Fortress Monroe the day the blockade commenced where the papers of the "Ringdove" were endorsed and the boats ordered off. The vessels then returned to Lakes Cove and anchored near CAPTAIN JOHNSONS residence where the "Ringdove" remaained while the "Burnette" returned to Baltimore to reland her cargo. Upon her return from Baltimore, the two vessels were sailed up the Nanticoke river as far as Beacon Quarter to prevent the water worms from damaging their bottoms, where they were found by the steamer 'Yankee' and taken to Washington. Such are the facts as stated by CAPTAIN JOHNSON. From these facts there can be made out no violation of law. They had no smuggled goods on board, they made no attempt to run the blockade, they have in no degree or instance attempted to give aid and comfort to the Virginians, and yet they have been torn from their moorings, their hausers cut and thrown overboard, then towed themselves to Washington, where they are held on some plea, unknown to the owner, but groundless, as the facts show.
