Description: Rejected Man Wanted to Die. Report of Three Brothers as Casualties Led to Attempt at Suicide.

Date: August 24 1918

Newspaper published in: Kansas City, MO

Chicago, Aug. 24.--Augustin MCHALE, 27 years old, is at a hospital here today recovering from the effects of gas, which it is alleged he turned on in his home with suicidal intent. MCHALE tried in vain to get into the United States service and then turned to the British-Canadian recruiting mission, where he was rejected as physically unfit.

He returned home yesterday to find a letter saying one of his brothers had been killed in action "over there," another had been wounded severely and a third brother was missing. He sent a note to his wife asking her forgiveness and when she returned she found him on the bed with the gas turned on. A police surgeon revived him with pulmotor and at the hosptial it was said he would recover.
