Republican Candidate of the People - For President, Andrew Jackson - Election in 1832
The opening of the Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road as far as Frederick, an extent of 60 miles, was commemorated in this city with every demonstration of joy, and all the parade which the short time allowed for preparation, add the state of the weather for several days before the celebration would admit. For the proceedings of the day, we refer our readers to another part of this paper, copied from the "Herald," omitting only the speeches.
In the evening, the Mechanics celebrated the event by a brilliant ball at Mr. SHAFER's Fountain Inn, where "the light that lies in woman's eyes," sparkled like "living sapphire," was combined with the thrilling eloquence of the tuneful viol, to shed over the scene an influence which beauty and musick (sic) alone can inspire. At 12 o'clock, the company sat down to an excellent supper, prepared in a elegant and tasteful style; after which they repaired to the ballroom, when the dance was resumed and continued to a late hour. The walls of the ballroom were beautifully decorated with wreaths of evergreen and pictures, and on the floor was described, in blue and white chalk, a representation of the Monocacy Viaduct with the splendid Car "Frederick" passing over it. Not an event occurred to mar the pleasures of the festive scene - and the "living lustres" that may have been somewhat dimmed by too long a wakefulness, have assumed their wonted radiance, and beam again with light and smiles.
