Masonic News
The members of George Washington Royal Arch Chapter and George Washington Lodge of Free Masons, at Chambersburg, on the 30th of November resolved to surrender their charters and discontinue their meetings. Thus are the different chapters and lodges, with a spirit of moderation, consistent with the precepts and principles they have professed and inculcated, gradually ending to the hurricane of Anti-masonry, which sweeps like a hot monsoon over the land, and seeks to devastate and extirminate (sic) as it proceeds. For the honest, conscientious prejudices entertained by a large class of citizens, towards masonry, we have a due respect - they disapprove of it and refuse to countenance it either by example or commendation. To such though they be wrong, respect is due. They are honest. But political Anti-masonry, that spirit which seeks to combine men in secret political cabals, to advance their political fortunes, on an avowed enmity to a society having no political character or connexion (sic) - this spirit we must deprecate. As well might the Jews, or some sect of Christians, be selected, as objects of political annihilation.
