Married -- SOTELLO-RUIZ -- at Hollister, Sept. 26, by Rev. B. SMYTH; Fernando SOTELLO to Lottie RUIZ.
From the Monterey ‘New Era’ -- MELVILLE-MALARIN -- James MELVILLE, the popular and efficient instructor at the Del Monte gold links, was married this afternoon to Miss Christina MALARIN…took place at the parochial residence, Rev. Fr. MAHER officiating. Miss Louisa MALARIN, a sister of the bride, was maid of honor and Mr. Harry OLMSTEAD best man…the party repaired to the MALARIN residence on Tyler street…The happy couple will make their home in Monterey, taking up their residence in a pretty cottage at Oak Grove. Mrs. MELVILLE is native daughter of Monterey…Mr. MELVILLE…has resided here for the past 2 years…
Died -- GIRALDO -- at San Juan, Sept. 21, Frederick GIRALDO, aged 7 years, 11 months.
Died -- BLESSING -- near Hollister, Sept. 29, J.A. BLESSING, a native of Virginia, aged 71 years, 4 mos., 19 days. [Death of J.A. BLESSING -- …at his residence on the Santa Ana road. Deceased had, for a long time past, suffered greatly from heart trouble and on Saturday morning went out on his place to where Bert JOHNSON and Henry WALDEMAR were digging a well for him…complained of feeling unwell…sat down in the shade…WALDEMAR having occasion to ask him some question…found him dying…Deceased was a native of Virginia, born on the Red River, son of Abraham and Mary (ANDERSON) BLESSING. By the death of his parents he was left an orphan at the age of 2 years and was cared for by strangers. When a youth he went to Missouri and at the age of 20 crossed the plains from that State to California, coming via the north route and after a journey of 75 days landed in Placerville on the 1st of July 1850. He spent 25 years in the mines of Placer, Ed Dorado and adjoining counties and in 1875 came to this county and located near Hollister. He was a pioneer of both this State and county…He leaves a widow and 2 sons and a daughter, viz: Frank and Oliver BLESSING and Mrs. Henry CANFIELD of Exeter, Tulare county. He was step-father to Mr. Bert ROE and Mrs. Thos. BOYD, of this place. The funeral took place last Monday afternoon…the remains were interred in the Odd Fellows’ Cemetery.
Died -- HUBBELL -- at Hollister, Sept. 29, Mrs. Belle HUBBELL, aged 55 years, of New York. […a resident at Mrs. Jas. I. HODGES’ house, on Fourth street, died suddenly from a severe hemorrhage…had suffered for a long time past from consumption and was subject to hemorrhages.]
Died -- THOMAS -- at San Juan, Sept. 30, John W. THOMAS, a native of Ohio, aged 41 years. [Death of J.W. THOMAS -- Editor J.W. THOMAS, of the San Juan “Missing Link,” passed away last Sunday morning from the effects of blood-poisoning, contracted, according to deceased’s statement, from a common brass mouth-harmonica, which he attempted to play a week or so ago…He leaves a widow and 10 year old son…Deceased enjoyed the distinction of being the only man in the past 25 or 30 years that ever made a paper go at San Juan…]
Suit for Divorce -- Mrs. Kate CARMACK, wife of Geo. W. CARMACK, the Klondike millionaire…filed…an action for divorce against her husband. The grounds…are desertion and infidelity…without cause or provocation deserted plaintiff last April and that he has been guilty of infidelity with a certain Mrs. SAFTIG, of Seattle, Washington, at Seattle, San Francisco, and diverse other places…[lists property]…The complaint also alleges that the parties to the action were married in the Dominion of Canada in 1886 and the issue of the married is 1 daughter, Graffey CARMACK, aged 8 years. George CARMACK…while wandering around in Alaska he became acquainted with his wife, who is an Indian, and married her… [from 9 Nov issue -- Defendant denies that he was ever married to plaintiff…denies that the child, Graffey CARMACK, is the issue of any marriage between himself and plaintiff.]

Died -- DANKS -- at Hollister, Oct. 10, Joseph Carrier DANKS, a native of Massachusetts, aged 84 years. [Death of J.C. DANKS -- …a great shock to his many friends as it was not generally known that he was ill…an aggravated case of erysipelas…The funeral took place from his late residence yesterday afternoon, the services being conducted by Rev. J.W. BRYANT. The remains were interred in the IOOF cemetery.] [from 26 Oct issue -- The will of the late J.C. DANKS, filed for probate…bequeaths…to his wife, Caroline S. DANKS, the 5ac homestead on Powell St. during her life time. At the death of said Caroline S. DANKS said property is to be divided as follows: ½ to his daughter, Elizabeth K. BOYLE, and ½ to his grand-children, Alice E. WEIR, Anna and Edith DANKS, share and share alike…]

HATCH was the scene of a quiet wedding, when Samuel MILES and Miss Gertie WALSH were made man and wife…The happy couple left by private conveyance in the afternoon for Hollister…then proceed to Mr. MILES’ ranch, near that place…The bride is 20 years of age and resides in Carneros, while the groom is a native of Missouri, 26 years old…

Died -- HIGUERA -- in Hollister, Oct. 13th, Juan M. HIGUERA, a native of California, aged 57 years. […father of Johnnie HIGUERA, of the ‘Lance’ office…after a long period of suffering from a complication of diseases. Deceased was an old resident of this place, having resided here for some 25 years…The funeral took place last Monday afternoon from the Catholic Church.]
M.A. DORN, brother of Judge DORN, of Monterey County, died at the Waldeck Sanitarium, yesterday morning, from weakness of the blood. In order to save his life, his sister, Dr. Dora DORN, had a pint of blood taken from her left forearm and infused into her dying brother’s veins…The effort was in vain, however…He was a very prominent and popular citizen of San Francisco…

Died -- SHERMAN -- in Hollister, Oct. 22, Ella E. SHERMAN, a native of Wisconsin, aged 44 years, 3 months, 10 days. [After a long period of suffering…The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon from the family residence on North St. This makes the 3rd bereavement by the SHERMAN family this year.]
Died -- HORN -- in Hollister, Oct. 22, G.M. HORN, a native of North Carolina, aged 68 years, 11 months, 4 days.
Died -- O’BRIEN -- at San Jose, Oct. 22, John O’BRIEN, a native of Ireland, aged 70 years.
Died -- McPETERS -- at San Juan, Oct. 22, Frances McPETERS, infant daughter of Mrs. Dilla McPETERS, aged 6 weeks.
