Description: Negro Belonging to Mr. John PENN Cuts the Throat of a White Child.

Date: April 26 1739

Newspaper published in: Philadelphia, PA

Annapolis, April 15.

On Sunday last a negro fellow, who was brought into the country last year, cut the throat of a white child, stabb'd and murdered a negro wench, and then hang'd himself, near the fort of Patuxon in this Province; the cause of his barbarities not being to be found out. He belong'd to Mr. John PENN, but was put to live with his Master's brother, Benjamin PENN. He was left at home with the child, and some time after the went went home with the child, and some time after that the family, when they found that he ha dug a hole and cut the child's throat over it, and let the blood run in, afterwards buried up the child, its head being almost off. It appear'd that he had had much strugling with the wench, for she had bled much in several places, at last was knock'd on the head with a rail. Then after washing his own shirt, he hang'd himself with a single strand of a trace, which had only one tuck in his neck instead of a knot.
