>>MONDAY, 26 JUNE 1865<<

MARRIAGE - in Snelling, on June 21, 1865, Hon. W.S. MONTGOMERY to Miss A.V. FOREMAN, both of Snelling.

MARRIAGE - on the 8th inst., on the Fresno river, James McARDEN to Miss Ellen GRAFMON, daughter of Gilman BAILEY, all of Fresno County.

DIED of CONGESTION of the BRAIN - A Mexican named Marceleno HERNANDEZ died yesterday, as we are informed, of congestion of the brain. This is the conclusion of the physician. On Saturday evening, about 7 o'clock at the Adobe Building, near Mormon slough, a difficulty occurred between deceased and another Mexican named HILL, which resulted in the latter cutting HERNANDEZ in the face, and striking him on the head with a stick. He lived 14 hours afterward. The Coroner informs us that the physician says that none of the injuries he received were such as to cause his death. Congestion is said to have been superinduced by excitement and the inordinate use of liquor.

PAINFUL ACCIDENT - On Saturday last, on Cherokee Lane, near the Calaveras river, a man named James BRANNAN had his right leg broken by jumping from a wagon. He was driving an unruly horse, when he suddenly jumped from the vehicle and sustained the painful injury. Dr. LANGDON was called to the sufferer's relief, and soon placed him in as comfortable condition as the nature of the case would permit.

VILLAINOUS - On Friday night last some contemptible wretch entered the garden of Samuel BROWN, driver of Dooly & Co.'s stage line to Sonora, and stripped the bark completely off a lot of young locust trees. None but a person of the most wretched disposition would be guilty of such vandalism.

---------------------------------------------------------
DROWNED - A correspondent at Lockeford writes us under date of the 25th instant, that the body of an unknown man was found in a slough near the residence of Joseph PUTNAM. J. McDOWELL, Esq., Justice of the Peace, held an inquest over the body and after hearing witnesses and finding no marks of violence on the body, the jury returned a verdict of his coming to his death by drowning and supposed he was insane.

The deceased was supposed to be about 50 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches in hight, auburn hair, whiskers tinged with gray and bald-headed. He had on, when found, black cassimere pantaloons and vest, new white shirt, black silk neckerchief, suspenders with brass buckles, custom made heavy calf-skin or light kip boots newly half soled, and a coarse leg-horn hat with a broad brim, wide black ribbon and blue trimmings inside.

The water in which he was found is described by our correspondent as being about 4 feet deep. Nothing was found upon his person by which he could be identified, and nothing in his pockets but a piece of a lead pencil, a quill tooth-pick and the key of a carpet bag. He was buried in the ranch of Mr. KLUNKER.

Afterwards it was learned that his names was WEBSTER, and some time ago employed in Mr. SNYDER's saloon on the levee. This is probably correct, as WEBSTER has been missing from the city for several days, and we are told the above description answers to his exactly.

---------------------------------------------------------

MAGNIFICENT SWORD - The sword, sash and belt, designed as a present to Brigadier General CONNOR, has been procured and is to be seen at the jewelry store of Mr. HAAS, on El Dorado street. The sword is a Swiss blade of the best manufacture and of the regulation pattern. The scabbard is of silver heavily plated with gold, beautifully chased on one side and studded with precious stones - diamonds, emeralds, garnets, and rubies. The belt is black velvet magnificently embroidered with gold and is of French manufacture. On the blade of the sword are the words "Union Forever;" the hilt is beautifully carved and is surmounted with a dragon with diamond eyes. On the scabbard is engraved the following: "Testimonial of esteem from the citizens of Stockton, California, to Brigadier General P. Edward CONNOR, U.S.V., July 4th, 1865. Aut vincere aut mori."

---------------------------------------------------------

HOMICIDE at KERNVILLE - The Visalia 'Delta' gives the following particulars of the killing of Michael O'NEIL at Kernville, on Sunday, the 4th instant, by John TUNGATE, of Clear Creek:

O'NEIL was badly in liquor when TUNGATE, with several others, came up from Linn's Valley, where they had attended a ball or dance. When they approached O'NEIL said: "There comes a set of d—d guerrillas, and I'll make some of them show blood before I've done with them," or words to that effect. He immediately approached TUNGATE and accused him of having given Bill KELSEY a pistol to beat Joe ROBERTS over the head. This TUNGATE denied, and pronounced O'NEIL's informant a "liar." O'NEIL advanced threateningly with his hand on his derringer - undrawn - when TUNGATE suddenly shot him in the neck, cutting the jugular vein, and causing almost instant death. TUNGATE was immediately taken before Justice WAYLAND, when, strange to say, although the whole transaction occurred in the presence of nearly a dozen persons, no witness was present who saw TUNGATE shoot, and he was discharged. A Coroner's jury decided that O'NEIL came to his death by a pistol shot fired by John TUNGATE.

A CABINET AND ITS CONTENTS - Captain J.M. AIKEN, of Coulterville, is the possessor of a cabinet containing a collection of minerals, which is one of the most remarkable specimens of fine mechanic art we have ever seen. It is 28 inches long by 20 wide, and contains 3 shelves inside. The whole is made of 7 different kinds of California wood: Manzanita, Indian arrow, mountain mahogany, granite wood, live oak, red oak, and sugar pine. The contents of the cabinet are 400 phials, containing 130 different minerals, including quartz and placer gold, silver, coal, several petrifactions, California agate from the Merced, cinnabar, nickel, lead, copper, etc., and all collected in this State. For 6 or 7 years Captain AIKEN has been engaged in getting together this interesting collection, the more complete we imagine anywhere to be found in California.

>>WEDNESDAY, 28 JUNE 1865<<

SUDDENLY SEIZED WITH CRAMPS - Mr. Charles WITTKOPF, while in his usual good health yesterday morning, was suddenly seized with cramps which were so violent that his friends despaired of his life. In a perfectly helpless condition he was carried to bed where several physicians visited him and succeeded in giving him partial relief. He remained in a prostrate condition throughout the day and in the evening was very sick.

INSANE CRIMINALS - Henry HILL, committed to the State Prison from San Francisco for the crime of grand larceny and Francis D. GRAY, committed from Tuolumne county, for 5 years, for manslaughter, arrived from San Quentin yesterday, in charge of Capt. S.M. ROYCE, and were taken to the Insane Asylum. Captain ROYCE is Superintendent of the Prison Yard at San Quentin.

DISCOVERY of a FALL on the SAN JOAQUIN - Mariposa 'Free Press' -- Mr. Thomas LYALL, formerly a resident of Red Banks, on the Merced river, returned from Evans' Creek, near the Upper San Joaquin, on Tuesday last, and reports having discovered a fall, at the mouth of the creek, where it empties into the San Joaquin, which has been heretofore unnoticed. The water from the creek, which at present is swollen by melting snows to an immense volume, plunges into the bed of the San Joaquin over a precipice or wall of granite, upwards of 200 feet in depth. The river itself here rushed through a narrow gorge or cleft in the granite, which appears to have been rent asunder by some terrible convulsion of nature. The fall and its surroundings are described by those who have seen them, as rivaling, in wildness and grandeur, the scenery in the Yo Semite valley.

THE MARIPOSA 'GAZETTE' has entered the 11th year of its existence. It is decidedly the best and ablest of our interior weekly exchanges and ought to be correspondingly supported by its neighbors.

DEAD - J.A. JACKSON, of the firm of Peters & Jackson, in this city, received a telegram yesterday informing him of the death of Dr. Robert PORTERFIELD, a well known resident of Stockton. The deceased has for a long time been struggling against that treacherous and insidious disease, consumption, and at last has fallen a victim to its attack. On receiving the tidings, Mr. JACKSON at once left for Sonora, to bring the remains of the deceased to this city for burial. Due notice of the funeral will be given.

MAN DROWNED - Jonas SERN, cook on the steamer Christina, fell overboard and was drowned in the San Joaquin river, about 50 miles above Hill's Ferry, on the 22d instant, in the afternoon. He was leaning on the rail which gave way and he fell into the water. Every exertion was made by those on board to save him, but their efforts were unavailing. Although he is said to have been, or claimed to be a good swimmer, he appeared perfectly helpless in the water, and it is supposed he was suddenly seized with cramps. The body was recovered on the return trip of the steamer and the remains buried near the side of the river, about a mile from the place where he was drowned.
