Description: Comstock Miner Dashed To Death (graphic)

Virginia City, 16 Feb, Bodie STEPLE, 30 year old Austrian minerfell from the cage assending in the Mexican winze this morning as was dashed to death on the sump platform of the 2500' level. So heavy was the impact that the body was forced through the 4" board flooring over the sump.
STEPLE had worked all night and was coming up woth seven other miners at the end of the shift when the accident occured. Between the 2300' and 2400' level the men on the cage noted a jar and upon in vestigation found the man had fallen or been dragged from the cage. His body was crushed and then fallen perhaps 200 feet.
The deceased was a single man of quiet disposition and steady habits. It is believed that he may have been suffereing from gases when he boarded the cage and may have fallen off in a faint.
State mine inspector, Ed RYAN made a hurried trip from Carson to investigate the incident.
