G.C. McMICKLE -- This gentleman, for a long time a resident of Sonora, was killed at the Eureka Saloon, San Francisco, on the evening of the 30th ult., by John YORK. Mr. McMICKLE was a native of Missouri, 39 years of age, and had been a resident of this State since 1848. YORK made his escape -- it is supposed on a vessel bound to the Sandwich Islands. The Mayor of San Francisco has offered a reward of $500 for his apprehension.
**SONS OF TEMPERANCE -- Springfield; Oct. 4, 1854 --
Mr. Editor: Enclosed I transmit to you a copy of resolutions, passed by the Springfield Division, No. 61, Sons of Temperance, on the occasion of the death of Bro. Thomas ATKINSON, which you are respectfully requested to publish in the ‘Union Democrat.’…That this Division deeply sympathize with the bereaved wife and family, (in Woodstock, New Brunswick)…That we sympathize with the brother and brother-in-law who are still with us…That a copy of these resolutions be sent to the friends of the deceased and that they be published in the Columbia ‘Gazette,’ and in the Sonora ‘Herald.’
Signed: James STOTT, R.S.
**ARRESTED -- It will doubtless be remembered that about the middle of June last the dead body of Capt. STRINGER, formerly of the Cold Spring Cottage, a man well and favorably known by the community, was found on an unfrequented road, near the Table Mountain, a few miles from here, having been shot while on his wagon, from an ambuscade by the road side. Suspicion fell upon M.C. KYES, the then tenant of the above house, with whom it was known some previous difficulty had existed, but he was not to be found, and by many he was supposed to be beyond the reach of the law. A few weeks ago, however, information came to the sheriff of the county, that KYES was at Los Angeles, and going by the name of BETTS. Sheriff SOLOMON, accompanied by Geo. S. EVANS, immediately started in his pursuit. On arriving at Los Angeles they were informed that he had gone to Tejon Pass, near which place he was arrested. Hearing that he probably would pass over a certain road on the following day, they obtained horses and rode to the place designated that night, where they awaited his approach, secreting themselves in the bushes by the wayside. At about the time intimated, KYES, with 3 or 4 companions, came in sight, and when he approached their place of concealment his horse was seized, and a couple of revolvers drawn on him in an instant. The arrest was so sudden and unexpected, that it unmanned him, and he made no resistance. The sheriff arrived here with his prisoner on Wednesday evening, and he is now in jail awaiting his trial.
**SERIOUS ACCIDENT -- James Hamilton BRIGGS, a nephew of Kit CARSON, while on his way to this country, received an accidental shot in his arm from his own pistol. Upon his arrival here, about a week since, it was found necessary to amputate it, which was accordingly done by Drs. KENDALL & BROWN, of the Tuolumne County Hospital, at which establishment he now is. He is now in a fair way of recovery. He has a brother (Moses C. BRIGGS) and an uncle (Moses CARSON) living in Sonoma Valley.
**BLOODY AFFRAY -- On Monday last our town was thrown into an unwonted commotion, by an affray of a most bloody character, the particulars of which are as follows:
It appears that a deadly feud has existed for some time between James G. LYONS and M.B. DUFFIELD, neighboring rancheros, residing a few miles from this place, on the Emigrant Road. Mr. DUFFIELD came down last week and swore out a warrant for LYON’s arrest, and while the deputy sheriff, Capt. AMYX, was on his way to his residence for that purpose, LYONS, with 2 of his friends, made his appearance here.
Meeting DUFFIELD on Monday morning at the City Hotel, he addressed him a few words calculated to lead to a collision, and placing his hand in his bosom, as was supposed by DUFFIELD for the purpose of drawing a weapon, he (DUFFIELD) drew his revolver and fired, wounding LYONS in the hand; previous to his firing, however, he was shot at from behind by Mr. Tim HAZLETON, the friend of LYONS.
LYONS, after his wound, attempted to get away, but was shot twice by DUFFIELD before he succeeded -- once in the back, the ball passing through the body, and the second time through the fleshy part of the arm. Upon turning round and discovering HAZLETON in the act of firing, he too was shot, the ball entering the upper part of the breast and passing out through the shoulder blade. DUFFIELD gave himself up, and, after an examination, was discharged. The wounded men are in a fair way of recovery.
LYONS, on Thursday, was taken to jail for safe-keeping, a true bill having been found against him for the murder of a Frenchman, last spring, by the late Grand Jury, and a bench warrant issued for his arrest.

**A WOMAN AND MAN SHOT -- At Pine Log, on Monday night last, a man named Martin HENNESSY and a Chilano woman were shot and dangerously wounded, the latter, it is supposed, fatally, by a body of Chilanos. They fled, and have not yet been arrested, taking with them 8 valuable mules belonging to Messrs. JACKSON & STONE, of Columbia. We do not know the causes which led to the affray.
>We are pleased to announce the arrival of Messrs. A.B. PRESTON and Henry PALMER, on the John L. Stephens, of the 1st of October. These gentlemen have just returned from a visit to their relatives and friends in the Atlantic States, and their return to the county of their adoption has been hailed with pleasure by their many warm and tried friends.
>CLARK’s Hotel, at Columbia, is now completed and furnished, and is one of the best arranged houses in the country. No one stopping there can fail to be pleased with the attentions bestowed upon him by all connected with the establishment.
>It will be seen, by referring to our advertising columns, that Dr. Mark T. DODGE, of New York, a physician of experience and ability, who came passenger on one of the last steamers, has become associated with his brother, J.W. DODGE, of Jamestown, in the practice of medicine.
>A bear and bull-fight in the afternoon, and a ball in the evening, will be the attraction at Don Pedro’s Bar next Thursday. A “good time” is anticipated.
**MINING ON THE TUOLUMNE -- From Mr. John E. METSON we glean some intelligence in regard to mining operations on the Tuolumne river. The “Know Nothing Company” (David THOMPSON and 6 others) are making $1000 a week; the Rhode Island Bar, (ARMITAGE claim, 2 men) have taken out $3700 in the last 3 weeks; the Boston Company (Patrick HICKEY and 4 others) are taking out a pound a day; Patrick CROWLY, with 5 or 6 hands, is taking out large amounts of the “dust,” but keeps the information entirely to himself. These claims are all on the Jacksonville Bar. The Island Company, a short distance below the town, took out on Monday 16 ounces, Wednesday 22 ounces and on Thursday 23 ½ ounces. Payne’s Bar Company, 2 miles below Jacksonville, have prospected as high as an ounce to a pan, but as yet have not got fairly under way. The Kanaka Bar is paying big wages to the miner; and everywhere they appear to be realizing good and remunerating wages.

**INDIAN OUTRAGE -- The following letter, published in the Oregonian (Portland, O.T.), gives a detailed account of the late massacre of immigrants in the vicinity of Fort Boise, by the Shoshonees, or Snake Indians. The writer, John F. NOBLE, was on his return, by the overland route, from a visit to the Atlantic States:
On the morning of the 22nd of August last, a party of 18 men left Fort Boise, for the purpose of rescuing 3 ladies and a number of children, who were supposed to be in the hand of a party of “Winnass” Indians, (one of the small tribes of Snakes, who live on Boise river), who attacked Mr. Alexander WARD’s train, from Missouri, on the 26th of August, about 25 miles above Fort Boise, on the south side of Boise river.
This party, on arriving at the place where the first attack was made, found the bodies of Alexander WARD, and Robert, his oldest son, Samuel Mulligan, Charles ADAMS, William BABCOCK and a German whose name is unknown.
Following the trail, for about 300 yards, the body of young AMON was found -- a lad of 17 years of age. He was 1 of 7 who came to the rescue, on the day of the attack, with William YANTIS. This young man fought with great valor, pursuing the Indians to the bushes, where he was killed. About 100 yards farther on, the body of Miss WARD was found, having been shot through the head with a musket-ball. Her body was much bruised, her hand showing signs of a desperate fight in resisting off the fiendish attempts of the [illeg] violate her youthful person. The marks of [illeg] were plainly indented upon her left cheek; [illeg] a hot piece of iron had been thrust into her person, doubtless whist alive, as a punishment for her resistance.
About 50 yards farther on, in the brush, 3 wagons were burned. The trail was followed up, and in about 600 yards the body of Mrs. WHITE was found, stripped of her clothing, and scalped. Her head was beaten in by clubs, and also a musket-ball had passed through her head. Her person showed signs of the most brutal violence.
In about 30 yards farther, upon the north bank of the river, their place of encampment was discovered. It consisted of 16 lodges, made of willow bushes. Here the bodies of Mrs. WARD and 3 children were found.
Mrs. WARD was lying in the encampment, in front of the fire. Her body had been robbed of all its covering, and was much cut and scarred by bruises. Her face had a deep wound, inflicted by a tomahawk, which probably caused her death.
The children were lying upon the fire, in front of her, having evidently been burned alive, as a portion of the hair still remained upon their heads, showing they had been held by the hair until they were burned to death, in front of their mother, and she doubtless was compelled to witness the horrid barbarity. She was soon to give birth to another child, which rendered the sight still more shocking. Several parts of limbs were picked up at some distance from the fire, having been dragged away by the wolves, or the Indian dogs; for several had been left in camp by them.
