Description: Shooting of Jim MECHAMDate: September 10 1879
Newspaper published in: Cairo, Illinois
It may be assumed that the report of the pistol that signalized the death of Jim MECHAM, awakened all the sleepers in the house. That none of these heard the ferocious watch dog bark, is convincing evidence to us that the murderer did not run away from the building immediately after firing the shot. This very fact furnishes a clue which the officers should not overlook. That the wife, awakened by the report, did not see anybody or hear any retreating footsteps, is another fact of no little consequence to those who may undertake the working up of the case. Wherever the officers can lodge a motive for putting the old man out of the way, there will be a good place to look for the murderer.
